Jalan Tukang Emas / Goldsmith Street.

There are Street in the Heritage zone that often symbolized harmonies between all major races in Melaka. The streets are Goldsmith Street (Jalan Tukang Emas) and Temple Street (Jalan Tokong). Why? Because along Goldsmith Street and Temple Street are locations of the age old worship place of different faith. Kampung Kling Mosque (1748) and Sri Poyyatha Vinayar Moorthi temple (1781) place side by side at Goldsmith Street. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple (1600s) is at Temple Street.

Goldsmith Street and Temple Street can be easily reach from Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat). The two street also connected to Hang Lekiu Street and Hang Kasturi Street. The locals often described the phenomena as Harmony Street. The Street Stretch about 500 metres walking distance from Goldsmith Street to Temple Street. All the 3 worship places are still actively used by the worshiper.

We can see in Friday, Kampung Kling Mosque will be flooded with Muslim around the City to perform Friday prayer and it has been done since hundred years ago. While the Mosque is at the center of mainly Chinese old shop lots and Temple, the religious occasion can be done peaceful and harmonically. For tourist, they can shoot photo of the mosque but can’t enter the main prayer hall. To understand and respect each other faith are the key to achieve harmony.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple are continued to be visit by all the Chinese around Malaysia and oversea. The Temple also continues to serve the spiritual needs of the Chinese community in Malacca. On 28 September 1949, Parliament passed the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple Incorporation Ordinance 1949. The temple have a website and you can browse it here. Also for Sri Poyyatha Vinayar Moorthi temple, Most of the Hindu religious activities and festivals in Melaka will be directly or indirectly linked back or connected to this old temple. Some of the notable festivals are Datuk Chachar Festival. and Feast for Lord Muruga.
