I met with the Secretary of the Navy

Few weeks ago United States Secretary of the Navy was here in Melaka for short non official visit. It’s Mr. Ray Mabus the 75th United States Secretary of the Navy. We help him to find suitable antique shop around Hereen Street and Jonker Street. I think we don’t have post like Secretary of the Navy in Malaysia. In United States, The Secretary of the Navy is responsible for conducting all the affairs of the Department of the Navy and work directly under President and the Secretary of Defense.

NUS touch @ 54-56 Tun Tan Cheng Lock Street



Tun Tan Cheng Lock house…

Tun Tan Cheng Lock street formerly known as Hereen Street are uniquely associated with Peranakan House. The original Peranakan House here has been preserved for generation. Street along Tun Tan Cheng Lock are model of Town System of the past. The Narrow street is a one way street with a row of Town Houses some dated back at Dutch period. Now National University of Singapore and Melaka jointly making effort to conserve 2 unit of town house at the street that is no 54-56. Why the 2 units? This is because no 54-56 are belongs to the late Tun Dato’ Sir Tan Cheng Lock. The street name is dedicated to this man. Once was a Malaysian Chinese businessman and a key public figure who devoted his life to fighting for the rights and the social welfare of the Chinese community in Malaya. Tan was also the founder of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA), which advocated his cause for the Malaysian Chinese population.

Malacca Dutch period circa 1744…

We have no official Dutch Settlement here in Malacca like the Portuguese Settlement even though the Dutch was the longest European power that ruled Malacca – 183 years. If Portuguese Admiral Afonso de Albuquerque was famous because his effort to win Malacca for Portuguese, Admiral Cornelis Matelief de Jonge was among the important figure to defeat Portuguese from Malacca. In the early 17th century, the Dutch East India Company / VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) began the campaign to destroy Portuguese power in the East. After they take control the strong fort – Fortaleza de Malacca, they restored and extended the existing fortification. They also change the Portuguese name for the fort such as Bastion Santiago in Portuguese period to Bastion Wilhemus during their presence.

Walking Along Jonker Walk..

A pedestrian walkway situated along Jalan Hang Jebat and continued along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Jalan Hang Jebat is previously known as Jonker Street. The walkway till today is still called the Jonker Walk. Jonker Walk is situated at the heart of Melaka town. This street is one of the oldest in town dated back when Dutch conquered Melaka. The name Jonker is Dutch word for ‘Jonkheer’. Jonkheer means prince or master. The street established in Dutch era for lower level of people to live such as servant to the Dutch Officer that live at Hereen Street or now Tun Tan Cheng Lock Street. Historian said that Jonker Street has been here as early at 1641.
