As far as I know there is only one, it’s Macau. That mean many Malaysian goes to Macau. The Macau Tourism Department website also support other languages such as Indonesian, French, German, Arab and Portuguese. Have you ever been to Macau? One thing the same about Macau and Melaka is Portuguese also came to Macau. The Portuguese landed in Macau on 1550.

Prime Minister at Philea last Saturday…

Prime Minister was here last weekend to open the Philea Resort & Spa and also closing ceremony for Sukan Malaysia. XIII. For the tourism site PM also stating few points about how it gonna be in 10th Malaysia Plan.
In 10th Malaysia Plan the government had approved allocation for a further extension of the ‘Melaka River Cruise”.

PM Said that Malaysia was among only three nations in the world to record an increase in tourist arrivals for last year. I can’t get the exact data but I do got this data for 2010 from Internet:

“Similarly, other Asian countries maintained the upward trend of previous months with Japan (6.8%), Malaysia (38.4%), South Korea (68.1%).”

Now everyone seem to already think about niche. Niche..niche..niche. Luckily Melaka already had a niche given by the history. But the niche must be preserved accordingly. Visitors come to Melaka usually to experience the 600 years of the past. From the Melaka Sultanate that rule the entire archipelago to the Portuguese Invasion, Dutch and British.

This few years, Melaka want to tap into another aspect of tourism that is theme park for family. Starting from A Famosa Waterworld, the River Cruise, rotating Gyro tower and now the Wonderland theme park

Tourism products owners also must think about niche to make advantage of the good Malaysia tourism atmosphere. Some hotel in Melaka like Philea Resort already exploring new niche in hotel development – using log.

I knew that all Malaysian travelers are aware about the Melaka Airport at Batu Berendam. Now, the airport is known as Melaka International Airport and until now, it only have Riau Airlines, flight from Pekanbaru, Indonesia. But, Melaka needs more airline coming and land in Melaka. We have all the facilities and the state government really passionate about this airport.

The state government will give support for the airlines that want to operate in Melaka. So, any airlines company interested at Melaka International airport? You can give the ideas, how to make this thing happen. A new business model for this airport. Again a little information about the airport.

The airport was officially opened on Oct 1952 by the Duchess of Kent. It is located 10km from Malacca town. After 57 years of operations, it was relocated to a brand new terminal in May 2009. The new terminal can accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers per annum and can handle 300 passengers per peak hour compared to 100 previously. It has two parking bays capable of accommodating Boeing 737-400/Airbus 320 and four parking bays for General Aviation Aircraft. Also configured are four immigration counters to handle departure and six to handle arrival while three baggage carousels have been installed to handle baggage for departure and arrival flights.

The new terminal underlines the State Government and Malaysia Airports’ vision to enhance passengers’ experience and also boost the tourism industry of the Historical City.

Remembering the old days…Melaka River..

Melaka since 1999 till 2009, a total of 47.25 million tourists visited Melaka with an average increase almost 20% per annum and the average length of stay about 1.89 nights. During the eleven years, of which 76.6% came to Melaka are domestic tourists and the balance 23.4% is composed of foreign tourists.

In 2009 alone, we have received a total of 8.9 million tourist arrivals compared to 7.2 million tourists in 2008 an increase of 23.6% during the length of stay 1.89 nights. In terms of foreign markets, Singapore continues to be the market leader with shares of 17.2%, followed by China (12.5%), Indonesia (8.5%), Vietnam (2.6%) and Hong Kong (2.3%).

In the same period, emerging markets have been identified in addition to the traditional markets continue to remain. Five significant emerging markets is India, the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Thailand where their number has now reached a total of 17,000 people until 34,000 people.

In 2010, the state government is targeting a total of 8.2 million tourists will visit Melaka and spent over a period of 3.0 nights. The State Government is confident this figure could be achieved if no factors outside our power to prevent their coming to this country. This achievement could be reached because of Melaka is indeed popular among tourists and rich tourism products and places of interest to visit, meet and recreation.

Total tourist expenditure is estimated for this year will achieve an increase of RM5.0 billion from 11:11% in 2009, which only recorded expenditure of RM4.5 billion.

In many occasion sports has proven can unite all sorts of people. In many ways, sports can make everyone sit in the same table, drink and watch the game. Year by year, sports has become more Global with satellite TV and up to date information on the Internet. Everyday most of us will read sports results first at the news paper before turn on to another page. For certain country like England, their local football league are watch by thousand of people around the world.

And many people dream to go to England to watch the game live. Favorite team are Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. There are all a global brand now. In 2008, the growth of this Sport travel & tourism is US$600 billion or +10% of the international tourism market. International Sports Press Association said in it’s recent article:

With the contribution of travel & tourism to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expected to rise from 9.9% in 2008 to 10.5% by 2018, the next decade will see tourism revenues exceeding US$10,000 billion.

People talk more about sport now, rather than others tourism aspect like historical, nature, theme park or nice hotels. Other than sport, tourism aspect like good hotels, historical and theme park are like tangible or as it is but sport is more human. Sport will drive more emotion, feelings and passion. So, usually sport fan will not look into to their budget spending rather than normal tourist. They are buying expensive tickets to watch their favorite team. In certain tournament / cup season, these sport fan will booked the hotels early and the hotels price will up. For Example this year world most famous event – Fifa World Cup 2010, South Africa.

Sports travel and tourism is not just only about tourist arrival, it’s concurrent with other things like the satellite tv, Internet, commercial brands, sport celebrity and the tradition.
