Wells are among the famous human creation for fairy tales. Around the world there are many stories about wishing well. The ancient Germanic and Celtic considered wells and springs sacred places. They throw the armory of their defeated enemy in to the well after battles as an offering to their god. Normal practice for dealing with an ancient or luck well are throwing coins deep into it and widely accepted around the world. You can see Chinese or European throwing coins into a well for luck.

Apart of many old wells in Melaka including the Hang Li Poh Princess well, Well Of Hang Tuah (Perigi Hang Tuah) are the most famous. Although the history for Hang Tuah well a mostly legend it is still preserved by the government as it has known by the locals long ago. This different with Hang Li Poh well that has been written officially in history and used by the Portuguese and Dutch.

Hang Tuah is a Legendary Warrior cum Admiral in Melaka Sultanate about 14 to 15 century, strong and intelligent to serve the Malacca Sultanate court. As legend says that Hang Tuah had been travel to Arabs,India, Siam, Brunei, Java and China as Malacca diplomat and in the journey he has won all the fight with local fighter, pirates and emperors guard. The key of Hang Tuah ability is his magic chanting and Holy Kris that can make him immune from any weapons. In Hang Tuah Tale book written by anonymous, it said Hang Tuah once has been shoot with the Portuguese cannon at his chess but survive.

The Hang Tuah well said to be dug by him only and located in Duyong Village (Hang Tuah Birth Place 600 years ago) about 4 Kilometer from Melaka town. Acoording to the legend it is believed that a white crocodile (the Kramat of Hang Tuah) dwells in this well and those who are able to see the spirit (Kramat) will be bestowed with good luck. The water also can make your face more younger but not proven scientifically. As typical story of all ancient wells, the water in this well also never dried even in drought time.

On 1829, when British ruled Melaka, there was part of district in Melaka called Naning. At that time, Naning have their own constitution followed traditionally hundred years ago without interfere from previous colonial government such as Portuguese and the Dutch. But when British came, they ask Naning to pay for 1/10 tax from all Naning crop yield. Naning Head, Datuk Dol Said refuse to pay the tax and declare a war with British government in Malacca. British attack Naning for the first time in 1831 but they have beed defeated by Datuk Dol Said guerrillas.

In Mei 1832 British again attack Naning with more troops and succesfully defeated Naning front line. Datuk Dol Said surrender to the British in 1834 but British give him pension about 100 dollar (maybe pound sterling the currency at that time) every month until his death on 1849.

Although the British win the fight, many of the British soldier were killed in the battle and one of them was George Holford Walker. Unique thing about George Holford Walker grave is that he was buried with his horse and dog here at Alor Gajah Town. You can see the grave here the biggest is him, second smaller grave is his horse and the smallest grave is his dog. Locals said that when George Holford Walker died, his horse and his dog stood loyally behind his dead body until two of the animal also died. To paid a tribute for that loyalty George Holford Walker buried with his animal.

I manage to find the name George Holford Walker at google. The article said that :

Hodson, to the memory of Deeply Lamented Ensign George Holford Walker, who was hot through the heart in an affair with the Malay on 3rd of May 1832, and died instantaneously in his 19th year appears in Vol. XXXIII, No. CCIII, of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine (January 1933) with the first stanza as follows:

Of fare-thee-well! our beautiful and brave!
Our lovely, gentle, generous, gallant boy!
Oh! what sum of ardent hope and joy
Lies crush’d and wither’d in thy distant grave!

I dont know what it’s all about maybe some sort of poem to their soldier at that time.

Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat the famous duel in old Malay folklore. Once best friends with a band of five fighters. Hang Tuah was the most skilful and Jebat was the second most skilful. Malay folklore said that Hang Tuah was vanished in Duyong River with his Kris Taming Sari and Hang Jebat was torn apart by Sultan and the Body was thrown away to the Melaka Straits because of his murderous rampage and confrontation against Sultan. Here the story in English I found about the Hang Tuah and friends legend.

Hang Tuah Mausoleum, Tanjung Keling.

But both of them seems to have a resting place and in a form of Mausoleum too. Historian did not know the exact time both of the warrior died but the Mausoleum do exist. Hang Tuah Grave located at Tanjung Keling and historian predict he died pre-date the Portuguese Arrival in 1511. Local Lore said that at that time Malaccans had to hide the identity of the grave owner from the Portuguese as the invaders will wipe out every vestige of the Malaccan sultanate as a show of force. So back then people just called it makam tua (old grave). After Dutch came they allowed for the tomb to be reconstructed and the bricks and plaster used are believed to date from Dutch Era.

Hang Jebat Mausoleum, Jonker Street Melaka.

For Hang Jebat, his grave is in the heart of Melaka Old Town. Flanked by shop houses. One of the old roads in the area before was Jonker Street has been renamed Jalan Hang Jebat. Acehnese design of the grave show that Jebat was given a warrior’s burial despite been openly defiant and even indulged in adulterous bouts in the Sultan’s harem.

Now the mausoleums are another historical landmarks in Melaka. Either the legend true or not depends on what we believed. Visitors are welcomed to observed the grave as no fees or visitors time given. But maybe a bit awkward to visit the grave late at night.
