In Malaysia, you can’t get as many Peranakan / Baba Nyonya (Straits Chinese) Restaurant as in Malacca. This is because Melaka has the root of the Baba Nyonya Heirloom. Usually Baba Nyonya Restaurants are family business. The owner maybe the 5 or 6 generation and will adopt their ancestor recipe into the cooking. You also can see the family pictures in it. The owner will be very friendly and welcoming you to the restaurant.

The restaurant also will be modified according to classic Chinese shop houses 100 years ago. You can see the wooden elements crafted like the wooden door and window. Bibik Neo is one of the many recognized Baba Nyonya restaurant in Malacca. Well bibik is a call similar like an Aunt. Baba Nyonya word for it is Bibik. Neo is the person Name.

Located in Taman Melaka Raya Melaka. If you drive slowly and watch for the sign board,the restaurant will be easily spotted. If not you will miss it and can’t turn back as it is a one way street. Can reach the restaurant from 2 direction, from Ujung Pasir go straight towards Melaka Raya, turn right at the first junction, stay to the left and the restaurant will be few block just before Jalan Melaka Raya 15. From Jalan Syed Abdul Aziz go straight along the road until the end of it, pass Casa Lago and Aloha Bistro, turn left and go straight to the end of the road turn left again.

The menu? As usual, authentic Peranakan Cuisine like Mixed vegetables, Itik Tim (Duck and Salted Vegetable Soup) , Steamed Brinjal Ladiesfinger/Okras, Ayam Pongteh (Miso Soy Chicken).
Ais Kacang, Pulut Hitam, Otak-otak, Kangkung Belacan, Eggplant (brinjal or aubergine). Oh and the restaurant serve Halal food.

If we direct translate it, it will be International Fat Rice. Sound a little bit awkward but that for real with fat highlighted. Nasi or Rice are main Malaysian menu. Nasi lemak is rice that cooked with coconut milk and Nasi Lemak is like Malaysian official breakfast menu. It’s heavy, high with carb and to make it worst, the side dishes like boiled egg, ground nuts, fried chicken, dried anchovies and shrimp. Doctors not recommended. But as usual most food that can kill are people favorite like the famous fast food chain.

Now one of the Kuala Lumpur famous Nasik Lemak now at Dataran Pahlawan Megamall. Located at the upper floor. The highest ground at Dataran Pahlawan Megamall. Because the Nasi Lemak operator now joining the franchise business, forget about RM0.50 cents nasi lemak here. All dishes are standard like common franchise kopitiam you know. Being only about 3 Kilometers from my office, I have been to this cafe few times. Located at Malacca Botanical Garden, only a walk away from Melaka Zoo and The Croc Farm. Pleasant surrounding from the Recreational Forest just behind it will make your appetite blooming. All menu are available from Malay, Chinese to Western, the experience chef will prepared for you. From Sambal(Chillies Paste),Fish Head Curry, Assam Pedas (Famous Malakkan Menu), Chinese ‘Char’ to Grilled Steak and Nyonya Cendol all you can eat.

The price are at intermediary level and you can match it to restaurant like Island Red Cafe where juice is around 4 to 5 RM per glass.The restaurant is certified halal and has free wifi. Chicken rice is common to all Malaysian. Chicken rice also known as the Hainanese chicken rice originated from China now part of the national daily food and it’s the fastest food you can order at the restaurant. The serving also suitable for lunch time as the package are complete with rice, chicken, salad, soup and sauce. Usually chicken rice serve in a plate where the rice is pour in to it with a measure of one soup cup.

However in Melaka, there is one famous chicken rice restaurant that made the rice into a ball. A rice ball. The place is Famosa Chicken Rice Ball. The restaurant is quite famous locally and nationally. Equipped with new technology, the rice ball are not produce bay hand anymore but using a machine it as to produce quality and hygiene rice ball. Famosa Chicken Rice restaurant got 5 branches in Melaka and only one have a halal certificate. The halal branch is at Tesco store. The other four branches serve non halal food. Kapitan’s Treat…

Lunch time at office hours will be a boring thing to do if you kept on dining at the 4th floor. The building official cafeteria. Imagine, 5 years at work, same dining table, same environment, same cooking auntie but one thing sure will not be the same as 5 years ago, the price. The purpose to have a cafeteria in the office building are for convenient and to save time since its 1 hour for lunch.

Sometime me and my mate want to go out from the usual and find a new environment to eat. But can we go out drive a car and went back to the office just in time… for one hour?. Mrs. Tan suggested that we eat at a not regular place, The Kapitan House. Hmm sound interesting since me and yantie never been there before. Mrs. Tan said than Kapitan House is Baba mix Chinese mix Malay restaurant and with the touch of western. Wow lets go there!. But the problem is we will never get back around 2 o’clock. Oh well no problem, at 2.30 we got an appointment at one of the Hotel in Banda Hilir. Boss will understand. Okay then off we go to the Kapitan House. Located at down town Melaka Raya.

Yantie choose a seafood tom yam with noodles, hey its not baba or malay its Siam. All you can get here at Kapitan House…

Mrs Tan choose Wan Tan Hor because it has her name ‘Tan’ in it.

Mrs Tan choose not to reveal his face, don’t be fool with the fair young hand. We can call her auntie already…

All the set comes with a soup.

Me choose to have Egg wrapped tuna sandwich. Full with mayonnaise. Added with the fries, I cannot finished it all… fell so full.

Cendol is another kapitan’s specialty. Don’t froget to try one.Not so bad…

Kapitan House interior are contemporary Baba – Nyonya style.

Fyi, the price are quite reasonable and maybe cheap if you look at the comfortable features and the food presentation. Each of us just paid about RM6.00 per set. Interested to try the Kapitan’s Treat? Here is the address:
