Although we have many souvenirs shops, many of them are just sellers that focus on small craft item that are not unique and can be found elsewhere. Some of them are imported from China but design and printed to suit current destination country needs like the fridge magnet, figures, key chain, cap, mug etc.

Replica like traditional houses needs patient and time to create hand made thus the price can be expensive. But now Traditional Malaysian houses are being produced in miniature form as souvenirs for handicraft enthusiasts and foreign tourists said The Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (MHDC) Melaka branch director Aididah Ibrahim.

MHDC To Develop Miniature Traditional Houses As Collectors Item
ALOR GAJAH, Aug 9 (Bernama) — Traditional Malaysian houses are being produced in miniature form as souvenirs for handicraft enthusiasts and foreign tourists.

A master miniature house, 30cm long and 30cm wide was being build completely of wood to immortalize the architecture and decorations of traditional houses of each state.

The Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (MHDC) Melaka branch director Aididah Ibrahim said the production of these miniature houses was being carried out in cooperation with three traditional house replica operators in Melaka.

Aididah said the current traditional replica houses which are 60cm long and 60cm wide were not portable and expensive with prices ranging from RM3,000 to RM5,000 each.

“The traditional miniature houses will only cost between RM300 to RM500 each depending on the carvings and decorations,” she told Bernama here.

Aididah said in the first phase of the project, the traditional house model of Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Johor would be produced before production is expanded to cover traditional houses of other states.

She said the traditional model houses found in Mini Malaysia in Ayer Keroh, Melaka would be the benchmark for replica operators in producing the miniature houses.

“The miniature houses are still in the research and development stage as there are several designs which need to be improved to entice customers,” she said.

She said the final miniature product was expected to be ready by the end of this year and would be marketed during the 2014 Visit Malaysia Year.

Aididah said the corporation was also developing traditional houses based on a ‘Do It Yourself’ (DIY) concept for customers to be involved in process of assembling a model traditional house.
