Raleigh expedition in Malaysia

Do you ever heard about Raleigh? What I know that I remember riding on my Grandfather Raleigh when I was a little kid. But that’s a bicycle. This Raleigh expedition is not a bicycle expedition but a charity expedition to make a difference, get me?

Raleigh is like a charity organization that based in England… Interesting is that they also have expedition in Malaysia and they called it Borneo Expedition. They first went to Sabah in 1987 and since 2003 Raleigh have run over 20 expeditions in Sabah, North Borneo.

When they do the expedition they do things like:

-Community projects
-Environmental projects
-Adventure

Having an adventure in the beautiful rain forest, dive in the crystal clear water in pacific ocean, mix with the local tribe while building their new home…Great travel adventure huh?

Know their expedition and history here. You can make a donation too…

So what is eco tourism?

Riding on a 4 wheel drive and hit the forest ? No

Eco-tourism is more on ‘conserving’. Conserve the environment so that it can improve the well being of the locals – The International Ecotourism Society (TIES).

So when you think about to build something to attract tourist in an area that is natural, you must think to leave it as it is so that it will not destroyed by human development. If not with minimal impact on it such as forest cutting.

Imagine if humankind can realize the impact of ‘conserving’ as early as modernization era struck the world where people build sky rise building. Maybe now we stood between a hundred years old tree like sandalwood, teak, meranti, cengal … and our office or bank in the city. With shrub everywhere. A refreshing living huh? Maybe the bad thing is Tiger wondering around in front of your office..

The first thing we think when developing a land is to scrap it out, tear it and flatten in like a field in the dessert. Forest vanishing is one thing, river polluted with dirt from the construction site is another thing. Maybe in the future we can create a development project that ‘blend’ with the nature…

So if you like to conserve for the future of mankind, from doing a demo that will bringing traffic jam and add more garbage on the street. Better you do a volunteer work.

At The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) website, they have build a map that point every organization / travel agent that you can work with to do the eco tourism activities. Just open the website here, go to ecotourism explorer and pick which country. Then it will display to you the name, the address and the contact.

Go Green!
