After Awarded the World Heritage Site, whats next?…
Published July 19th, 2008 in Melaka, News & Update, culture, historical spotAfter the inscription of Melaka as a heritage site by UNESCO on 7th July 2008 together with Georgetown of Penang, Melaka State Government surely have a long term plan. The state government will setup a Heritage Steering Committee headed by State Secretary. Datuk Seet Har Cheow Melaka State Tourism Exco said that the committee will work closely with Melaka Historic City Council Conservation Committee as well as NGOs. The state steering committee will be including NGOs as well.
State government hope that Melakkan who still carrying the traditional businesses to maintain their heritage shop houses and state government will assist them on ways to make their compound alive. The committee also will keep in touch with KEKWA (Ministry of Culture and Heritage) to get their authorities to brief as well train the officers in the newly form committee. For info, The World Heritage Committee meets once a year and consist of representatives from 21 of the States Parties to the Convention elected by their General Assembly.
On the other hand, a Celebration in conjunction the new recognition will be held in the whole month of August and the final celebration will be on 31st of August. Part of the activities is to put an inscription stone as to remembering the Melaka success. Other activities will be known soon.
