CM said Melaka confident to get the World Heritage City recognition from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This were because of the hard work that have been done by Melaka State Government in preserving all the historic landmarks here.

CM also said that UNESCO representative that was visited Melaka not long ago were excited with the Melaka progressive work in managing the historical site such as Stadhuys Complex and Old Tomb. Melaka involvement in UNESCO showcase in Paris early this year also look beguiling to them. Discussion about Melaka dossier and look through at the technical report from UNESCO also took place at the showcase in Paris. Melaka was represent by Museum Dept. and City Hall.

Meeting will be held at Quebec in Julai and the result will be known there. This application to be listed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Site were made with the State of Penang last year.

As of 2008, a total of 851 sites are listed: 660 cultural, 166 natural, and 25 mixed properties[3], in 141 States Parties. UNESCO references each World Heritage Site with a unique identification number; but new inscriptions often include previous sites now listed as part of larger descriptions. As a result, the numbering system currently ends above 1200, even though there are fewer on the actual list.

Each World Heritage Site is the property of the country on whose territory the site is located, but it is considered in the interest of the international community to preserve each site for future generations of humanity. The protection and conservation of these sites are a concern of all the World Heritage countries. More info about the list here.

  1. Being Malaccan, I am proud if Malacca can be listed. However, I would hope that the state do not further demolish old buildings for the sake of modernisation – as we’ve seen that happened.

Ive act brought my overseas friends and though they like it, but they were a lil dissapointed on the buildings – like the Hereen St & Jonkers. They wanted authenticity like Hoi An, Vietnam.

I do not know whether to agree with them or not, but I think we need to conserve our buildings properly and not simply destroy them.

Also, the padang should have remained a padang – that is what many people tell me, and that one I agree.
