The Melaka Chitty community, also known as the Malacca straits-born Hindus or Indian Peranakans has been in Melaka, Malaysia since the reign of the Malacca Sultanate in the early 15th. century. Years before Parameswara the founder of Melaka in 1401 became the first sultan, Hindu traders had already come to Melaka. Trading between the West and East had long been established before then.

Atlas Ice (The Local Bumiputra Product Centre)

This 1673 building was constructed by the Dutch to orriginally serve as an office for the VOC (Dutch East India Company). In 1783 it was acquired by the family of Baumgarten, including Maria Catherine Velge. Today it had been renovated to be a venue for the display and sale of the local bumiputra products. Now, the place was known as The Local Bumiputra Product Centre and it has a Malay Restaurant, Forest Secret Spa and also Handicraft Shop. You can get a special price when you visit here, just along the Jonker Street. It was the only Malay shop at the Jonker Street. The restaurant offers a variety of choices Malay food and of course you can find the famous Asam Pedas Melaka here!!! The ambiance also nice and you will enjoy it. Come and let’s have a dutch meet east experience here.
