Hang Tuah Well

Hang Tuah Well

Hang Tuah’s well is located in Kampung Duyong where Hang Tuah was born and spent his childhood among four of his good friends who would later become the famous warriors of Malacca Sultanate. The well is said to be the abode of his soul which takes the apparition of a white crocodile. For a commoner to catch the glimpse of Hang Tuah is hardly likely. It is said that the holy among us can ever hope to see the apparition.

Perhaps one name that cannot be separated from Melaka is that of Hang Tuah – a warrior and admiral (or Laksamana) – whose name has become legend (or perhaps myth?) of sorts. He was said to have enjoyed an outstanding military career under Sultan Mansur Shah at the height of Melaka’s power in the 15th century, apart from being able to ward off attacks by the Siamese and Achenese fleets. Many of his exploits were documented in the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annal). However, the authenticity of some of the entries can be questioned as in several entries, Hang Tuah was potrayed as a ‘super human’, capable of feats outside the comprehension of human mind. Be it a legend or a myth, Hang Tuah has become very much associated with Melaka and some of his ‘legacies’ are said to be in existence today. Some locals believe that the well contains Hang Tuah’s spirit in the form of a white crocodile, which can only be seen by the spiritually pure. Come here!!!
