The Stadhuys – Dutch Legacy in Melaka

The Stadthuys was the official residence of the Dutch Governor. It now houses the Historic and Ethnography Museum which has many traditional bridal costumes and relics on display. Nearby, one will also find the Christ Church built in 1753, another fine example of the Dutch architecture.

This Dutch legacy is distinctively red colored. I don’t know if it has similarity with Chinese culture where red means Prosperity.
This massive red building was built between 1641 and 1660 on the ruins of a Portuguese fort, and is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. Inside you will experience Dutch Colonial architecture, substantial solid doors and louvered windows.

Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum

jalan tun tan cheng lock
Located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, or better known as the Millionaire’s Row, the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum is actually a row of residential houses built by the Dutch which were later bought over by the wealthy Peranakans (the descendants of Chinese immigrants who married with local Malays after arriving in Melaka).
The architectural style of these houses clearly reflects the East-West influence. Built in 1896, the museum offers an insight into the lifestyles of the Baba-Nyonyas in Melaka, especially at the turn of the century.

Witness the rich heritage in terms of traditional costumes, antique furnitures and elaborate carvings. Western influence can clearly be seen in the number of antique furnitures with Italian, British and Dutch influences. The western influence does not end here as there are many things in the museum…from the Victorian era lamp to floor tiles…have a story of their own to be told.
The Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum is located at No 48 and 50 at the row of houses. Guided tours are provided during the visit and no photography is allowed.
